Having developed in the 1980s out of earlier community festivals, the Bath Fringe Festival is one of the biggest and longest running independent fringe festivals in England. More than 170 events are staged at venues all over the city. Stand-up comedy is at the forefront of a variety of art forms and events ranging from the mainstream to the marginal. Cabaret, street theatre, indoor theatre, circus arts, dance, film and digital arts also feature in an eclectic programme. So too does music, including folk, Latin jazz, world music, pop and rock. Past performers have included Arthur Smith, Ken Campbell, Jeremy Hardy, Mark Thomas, Julian Clary, Bill Bailey, Rory Mcleod, Howard Marks and Billy Childish.
